Why the Tappan Zee is 3 miles wide
34 sec · Rockland Secrets
They built the Tappan Zee where the Hudson is 3 miles wide. On purpose. 🌉
In 1950 the Port Authority controlled crossings within about 25 miles of the Statue of Liberty, so the bridge went just past the line, at Nyack.
It opened in 1955. Rockland went from 89,276 people in 1950 to 229,903 by 1970.
